With day one completed I look back to times where my mentor would say "I'm sorry if this wasn't very exciting". I, on the other hand, could view it as nothing but. The School Resource Officer said that "the job is 90% paperwork, 10% action. Today I can definitely vouch for interest, if not action.
When I first arrived with my mentor to the department I was able to meet and speak with several workers including the Corrections Officer, Sergeant, School Resource Officer, Dispatcher, and several Patrol Officers. The most common way of communicating within the department seemed to be the lighthearted bantering between coworkers. With introductions out of the way, I headed out with my mentor to pick up a call for a burglary that happened several miles from our location. To say the least, it was a very informative and interesting morning. The afternoon was spent patrolling the area and even involving an arrest.
Coming into this internship I had no first hand impression about law enforcement work besides what was displayed on television series. I had heard a lot of criticism towards forensics on shows such as these as to how incredibly wrong they were. Sometimes there is also no real need for more high tech procedures of simple tasks such as finding a finger print. My mentor merely stood in the light and fogged up the containers seeing if there were any.
As for upcoming weeks, I have no worries and am excited for it all. As the dispatcher at the department said, "nothing is ever the same."
