Before officially beginning internship, it is important to get to know your mentor, the process they went through to get to where they are, and a little about how the organization is structured. This was done in 'email interview' style.
My mentor is currently assigned as a police officer for the city of Grandview, Washington. Before this he worked as a drug detective on the LEAD task force for twelve years. The LEAD task force is a multi agency group that investigate major drug traffickers in the state of Washington. During the course of twenty year employment, he has been on several speciality teams such as a member of the Fire Department for Grandview and Yakima County. Assignments included CERT Team, a helicopter team to eradicate marijuana, Swift Water Rescue Team, Confined Space Rescue Team, High Angle Rescue Team, EMT, Firefighter and Fire Arm Instructor.
My mentor became a police officer to provide protection and service to the citizens of Grandview and to enforce the laws of the state of Washington. As to the particular location he says "It was a good opportunity at the time. Some areas are better than most and this was a good compromise. Job is the same else where but some are busier than others."
In order to be hired you must be strong in common sense, a willingness to be flexible, and pass a back ground, physical, psychological, and polygraph test in addition to passing a lot of interviews. Although, to start, no skills are required.
In regards to organization, it is a para military ranked structure; Chief, Captain, Lt., Detectives, Sergeants, and then Officers depending on the size of the department.
