Semester Two
Choose your own adventure week
The "Choose Your Own Adventure Week" was an opportunity for students to reach further into topics we have been studying. This included either spending a week looking more into finances and money management, or participating in a week long hike covering the entirety of the San Dieguito Watershed. A watershed is an area that separates waters flowing to different rivers or seas. The San Dieguito Watershed flows from Volcan Mountain in Julian, down to the coast in Del Mar. This in total is approximately seventy two miles.
Around forty students chose to accomplish this hike. Everyday ranged from ten to fifteen miles total over very different biomes that exist throughout San Diego. Read about the experience of the hike. Learn more about the San Dieguito River Park. |

Work With Kindergarteners
Pictured to the left is the children's book page my group created with the organism our 'buddy' chose. Over the course of they year, my team has worked and become mentors to the kindergarteners located on the other side of the campus. Leading up to the second semester we helped them with projects and read to them. During the second semester of class, the subject in which we were studying overlapped with theirs allowing more collaboration.
We were able to take them out to see not only the plant life on campus, but also on a hike in the San Dieguito River Park. After going out to identify the organisms and plants existing in this area, the kindergarteners chose an animal to profile. The animal our buddy chose was the Bobcat. While the kindergarteners learned more about their animal, us biology students did a joint project with humanities in order to create a children's book that describes the intricate food web that exists amongst these organisms. |
Digital Stories
The Digital Story project was about researching given topics and creating a short, informative movie on the subject. This included researching evolution, compiling information about the San Dieguito Watershed, or picking a separate topic. The video below is about Jellyfish blooms and the continuing controversy upon what it means. I was very interested to look into what, and how much, data will solidify a theory or fact in the science world in order to convince others.
Life-Thoughts
Life-thoughts are prompting questions to be answered in the first several minutes of the class period. They pertain to the current subject of study.
